Try opening your worship service with my fresh arrangement of “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”! I’ve given this beloved hymn a contemporary makeover that’ll breathe new life into your worship set while keeping its profound message intact.
The History Behind Come Thou Fount
“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” was penned by Robert Robinson in 1758 when he was just 22 years old. Robinson, who had a turbulent youth, found salvation at age 17 after hearing a sermon by the famous evangelist George Whitefield. This hymn? It’s basically Robinson’s faith journey set to music.
What makes this hymn so popular? It’s real. Robinson doesn’t shy away from admitting how easy it is to wander from God. But he also celebrates God’s amazing grace that keeps drawing us back. Remember that line “Here I raise my Ebenezer”? That’s straight out of 1 Samuel 7:12, where Samuel set up a stone to remember God’s help. I love how Scripture-packed this hymn is!
A Worship Song in Disguise
While traditionally considered a hymn, “Come Thou Fount” possesses qualities that make it feel right at home in contemporary worship. It address the Lord directly, much like a worship song, and unlike most hymns which talk about the Lord or his atributes. It’s vertical, not horizontal. Its theme of God’s constant love and our need for His grace resonates across generations. This new arrangement capitalizes on these timeless truths, presenting them in a musical style that blends seamlessly with modern worship songs.
